Interface is funding a new initiative. We are paying for the salary and transport costs for a ‘mobiliser’ – a person to go into rural areas and small communities in Uganda to find children and adults needing reconstructive surgery for conditions such as cleft lips and burns contractures. The trips into the communities have already started, and assessments have taken place. Many patients have been found who would otherwise not have the chance to have life changing surgery. They will be brought to CoRSU hospital for their surgery.
This is part of the report that the ‘mobiliser’, Moses Kwanuka, has sent us:
After recruitment of the Community mobilizer in September 2013, several mobilizations have been conducted to identify children and adults with clefts and post burn contractures. A total of 31 patients were referred to CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital for specialized management. 90% of the patients have already got corrective surgery and undergoing post surgery care. They were identified from the following districts namely: Apac, Lira, Gulu, Oyam, Bugiri, Iganga, Mayuge, Luuka, Jinja, Amuru and Ntungamo.
